As modern updates of classic Jane Austen novels go, From Prada to Nada is no Clueless. Pretty much expending its quotient of wit on its title, this Latin-themed adaptation of Sense and Sensibility features sitcom-style stock characters and situations, not to mention the sort of ethnic stereotypes to be found in TV ads for fast-food Mexican restaurant chains.
Mirroring Austen's basic plotline, the film depicts the travails of rich sisters Nora (Camilla Belle) and Mary (Alexa Vega) after their father dies and leaves them orphaned and penniless. Forced to leave their Beverly Hills mansion and live with their aunt (Adriana Barraza) in her modest East Los Angeles home, they experience severe culture shock as they come to grips with their Mexican heritage.

No Strings Attached is the blandest of romantic comedies and only attempts to give itself an edge through a half-assed attempt at raunchy humor and salty language. It sets up situational comedy that would feel stale in a 1980s sitcom and populates these unfunny scenarios with people who feel designed to serve the purpose of a bit rather than actual human beings who stumbled into a comedic situation. The only truly funny thing about No Strings Attached is how proud it is of its reversal of gender roles, which would be a feat worth applauding if the film had come out in the 1950s. Devoid of chemistry and humor, No Strings Attached is a romantic comedy that lacks both romance and comedy.
Adam (Ashton Kutcher) and Emma (Natalie Portman) are acquaintances who decide to start having sex with each other but without all the messy relationship stuff. Adam is a romantic, but he’s been wounded after his ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Ophelia Lovibond) starts dating his famous dad (Kevin Kline). Emma, on the other hand, is a cynic and finds the notion of emotional love to be illogical. However, she still enjoys sex and since she doesn’t have time or the inclination for a romantic relationship, she decides to become fuck-buddies with Adam. The notion of a woman who has no problem declaring her need for emotion-free sexuality and a man who is gigantic softy is a case of gender-reversal dynamics that will blow your mind provided you’ve been in a coma for the last half-century. You’ll also be surprised that Adam’s black friend (Chris Bridges) doesn’t have to drink from his own water fountain.

While Kutcher and Portman separately can be charismatic and likable, together they have no chemistry. The film assumes that we’ll care about Adam and Emma because they smile at each other a lot and so that means they’re falling in love. Their nothing about their relationship that’s special. Even though they’re trying to avoid a romantic entanglement, there doesn’t even seem to be a friendship that’s implied by the term “fuckbuddies”. They’re simply “fuck”. Sure, Adam will make a goofy gesture like creating a mix CD for Emma when she’s on her period, but they don’t share any inside jokes, mutual pet peeves, or anything that constitutes what most people would expect to see in a friendship.
That lack of understanding of how people interact with each other carries over to all of the relationships in the film. None of these actors feel like they enjoy each other’s companies and that the moment cameras stopped rolling, they stopped paying attention to each other. People say witticisms to each other, but these supposed friends don’t actually smile or react to when they hear a joke. And for a large cast filled with talented comic actors like Kline, Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, and others, everyone seems to be operating on their own. No one is trying to boost their fellow actor’s performance. Everyone seems bored with the material and it’s difficult to blame them. Bridges comes off best with his delivery and Lake Bell, who plays a coworker of Adam, seems like she has an authentic character before the film does overkill on her neurotic, motor-mouthed tendencies. It’s as if No Strings Attached discovered something real and had to snuff it out as quickly as possible in favor of the cheapest laughs possible.

Like Martin Lawrence’s two previous Big Momma capers, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son was not screened in advance for critics. Those who dutifully caught the movie were therefore forced to stand in line and buy tickets like everyone else on Friday. And some may have wished that they could have spent their Friday night doing something else. Indeed critic Roz Laws, who writes for the Birmingham Post in the U.K., where the film also opened, wrote that the 107-minute-long movie was “107 minutes too long.” She then added, “Please let this be the last film. I can’t take any more Big Mommas.” Critics on this side of the Atlantic echoed that groan, together making Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son hands down the worst-reviewed movie of 2011. Mark Olsen in the Los Angeles Times concluded that it is simply manufactured schlock — “a lifeless piece of pure product, slapped together with haphazard disregard for comedy, storytelling and filmmaking.” Several critics suggested that Lawrence only made this threequel because he saw the success Tyler Perry has had with his Madea character. Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel commented that Lawrence appears “trapped in the one persona that still pays the bills. And that character isn’t funny anymore.” Bruce DeMara in the Toronto Star imagined a time in the future when some alien civilization discovers artifacts that caused the ruination of our civilization — artifacts including Lawrence’s film, which “despite its highly negative reception by the entertainment critic-erati … still achieved a sizable economic return for its producers.” But Mike Hale in the New York Times, while describing the movie as a “schlocky family comedy,” does find one adjective to bestow on it that is not totally derogatory. The adjective is “amiable.”

His last film For Colored Girls had more maturity and substance than anything he has done in the past, but Tyler Perry has regressed to familiar and fairly noxious ground with Madea's Big Happy Family. Harping on the familiar themes and character types from all the previous films with Madea in the title, the movie demonstrates if nothing else that he knows how his checks are signed, and artistic growth is nothing compared to pleasing his built-in audience with the same sap and slapstick they've paid for nine times before.
The contrast between For Colored Girls-- which was a flawed film, to be sure, but at least interesting-- and this movie is defined sharply by Loretta Devine, who played the sassy and sexually confident Juanita in the previous film but is practically entombed as a suffering mother in Big Happy Family. Early in the film her character Shirley is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and quite rationally she attempts to gather her three grown children at her home to break the news. Despite being a living saint, though, Shirley has raised two kids who are monsters and a third who is dating one, Tammy (Natalie Desselle) is mother to two bratty boys and constantly belittles her husband Harold (Rodney Perry); Kimberly (Shannon Kane) is a frigid real estate broker who constantly belittles her husband Calvin ("Old Spice guy" Isaiah Mustafa); and Byron (Bow Wow) is under constant pressure from his girlfriend Renee (Lauren London ) to go back to selling crack.

Perry's moral universe has always acknowledged only two types-- the good-hearted heroes and the villains who need to learn a lesson-- but it's alarming that in Big Happy Family, every single bad character is female. Not only that, but the lessons these terrible women must learn about respecting their husband's authority and not prioritizing work over family seem like deliberate rejoinders to feminism; Big Happy Family leans less heavily on Christian messages than some of Perry's other work, but swaps it out for soppy morality based around a woman's role in the home and the triumph of the solid family unit.
